Bergamot Essential Oil: Sunshine in a Bottle
There are some essential oils that seem to brighten a room the moment you open the bottle. Bergamot is one of them.
Fresh and citrusy, with a soft floral sweetness underneath, bergamot has a personality all its own. It can feel cheerful and uplifting, yet there is something gentle and calming about it too.
For August's Soleil Scent of the Month Club, we chose an organic, bergaptene-free bergamot essential oil from Calabria, Italy. It felt like the perfect way to capture the warmth, brightness, and easy pace of summer.
And there is much more to this beautiful oil than its sunny aroma.
From the Groves of Calabria
If you have ever smelled a truly beautiful bergamot essential oil, you may understand why Calabria is so closely associated with it.
Calabria sits at the southern tip of Italy, surrounded by the Mediterranean. Its warm climate and coastal growing conditions are ideal for the bergamot tree, which produces a small, pear-shaped citrus fruit.
The fruit looks a little like a cross between an orange and a grapefruit, but bergamot has its own distinctive character.
And the fragrant essential oil comes from the peel.
Our bergamot is cold pressed from organically grown fruit peel in Calabria, capturing the fresh, citrusy aroma that has made Calabrian bergamot so prized around the world.

Why Bergamot?
Bergamot is one of those oils that is incredibly versatile.
Want something bright and cheerful? Bergamot works beautifully with other citrus oils.
Want something calmer? Pair it with lavender or frankincense.
Want something more grounded? Add cedarwood or sandalwood.
Want something floral? Try geranium, neroli, or ylang ylang.
It can move easily between these aroma families, which is one reason it has remained such a beloved ingredient in both aromatherapy and perfumery.
Try It: Morning Sunshine
If you need a little brightness to start your day, try this simple diffuser blend.
You'll need:
3 drops Bergamot
2 drops Sweet Orange
1 drop Grapefruit
Add to your diffuser and let the citrus aroma fill your space.
It's cheerful without being complicated, and it makes a lovely morning ritual.
What Does "Bergaptene-Free" Mean?
This is an especially important question when we're talking about bergamot in a summer collection.
Bergamot naturally contains aromatic compounds called furanocoumarins, including bergaptene. When traditional expressed bergamot essential oil is applied to the skin, these compounds can increase the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet light.
Our bergamot has had the bergaptene removed.
That's what bergaptene-free means.
It reduces the phototoxicity concern associated with traditional expressed bergamot, making this variety a better choice for properly diluted topical aromatherapy during the sunny months.
But bergaptene-free does not mean that the oil can be used undiluted. Essential oils are highly concentrated, and proper dilution is still important.
For this reason, we chose bergaptene-free bergamot for Soleil. It gives you more flexibility to explore this beautiful oil during the bright, sunny months of the year.
A Little Chemistry: What's Behind That Beautiful Aroma?
One of the things I love about essential oils is that their aromas aren't accidental. They come from naturally occurring chemical constituents within the plant.
Bergamot's aroma is influenced by several key constituents, including:
Limonene
Contributes to bergamot's bright, fresh citrus character.
Linalyl Acetate
Adds a soft, smooth quality and is part of what gives bergamot its beautifully rounded aroma.
Linalool
Contributes delicate floral notes and helps soften the sharper citrus character.
Together, these constituents help create bergamot's signature personality: bright, citrusy, floral, and gently calming.
Try It: Citrus Woods
Bergamot doesn't have to stay in the citrus family. Try pairing it with woodsy oils for a more grounded blend.
You'll need:
3 drops Bergamot
2 drops Cedarwood
1 drop Cypress
Add to your diffuser and enjoy the contrast between bright citrus and earthy woods.
This is also a great example of why I encourage you to experiment with your essential oils. A citrus oil doesn't always have to mean a citrus blend.
Bergamot + Lavender: A Beautiful Balance
Bergamot and lavender are a classic pairing for good reason.
Bergamot brings brightness. Lavender brings softness.
Together they create an aroma that feels fresh, peaceful, and beautifully balanced.
Try this combination in your diffuser:
3 drops Bergamot
2 drops Lavender
1 drop Cedarwood
The cedarwood gives the blend a gentle grounding quality without taking away from the brightness of the bergamot.
Go Beyond Citrus
Bergamot blends beautifully with many different aroma families.
Floral:
Lavender, Geranium, Neroli, Ylang Ylang
Woodsy:
Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Cypress, Frankincense
Herbal:
Clary Sage, Rosemary
Warm & Spicy:
Black Pepper, Cardamom, Ginger
One of my favorite ways to experiment with essential oils is to stop thinking about recipes as rules.
Start with a base note. Add something softer. Then add a bright top note such as bergamot.
Smell.
Adjust.
Smell again.
Your nose is your best blending tool.
A Simple Summer Ritual
Here's an easy way to turn bergamot into a little moment of self-care.
Add a few drops of your favorite bergamot blend to your diffuser or diffuser stone. Step away from your phone, sit somewhere comfortable, and take three slow breaths.
Don't try to accomplish anything.
Just notice the aroma.
What do you smell first? The citrus? The floral notes? Something warm underneath?
Sometimes aromatherapy doesn't need to be complicated. Sometimes it's simply a reason to pause.
And perhaps that's part of what makes bergamot such a wonderful Soleil oil.
More Ways to Explore Bergamot
Your August Scent of the Month box includes a little introduction to bergamot, but this beautiful oil can go much further.
Try creating a room spray with bergamot and other bright citrus oils for a fresh, welcoming atmosphere. If you're making a water-based spray, use an appropriate solubilizer or alcohol-based formula so the essential oils disperse properly.
Enjoy bergamot on an essential oil diffuser bracelet when you want portable aromatherapy throughout the day.
Create a massage blend by combining properly diluted bergamot with lavender, frankincense, cedarwood, or another favorite oil.
Or simply start with bergamot and experiment with oils from the scent families above until you find a combination that makes you smile.
Why I Chose Bergamot for Soleil
August is full of long days, warm evenings, outdoor adventures, and those last lingering moments of summer.
I wanted an essential oil that felt like all of that.
Bergamot has brightness without being overly sweet. It has citrus without feeling one-dimensional. It can lift the mood while still feeling soft and calming.
And choosing a bergaptene-free variety from Calabria made it an especially good fit for a summer collection.
So the next time you open your bottle of bergamot, take a moment before you start blending.
Close your eyes.
Take a breath.
And imagine the warm sun, the Mediterranean breeze, and the bergamot groves of Calabria.

A Note About Essential Oil Safety
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. Always follow appropriate dilution guidelines for topical use and perform a patch test before using a new topical blend. Avoid contact with eyes and discontinue use if irritation occurs. Keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets.
Our bergaptene-free bergamot is a more appropriate choice for summer topical aromatherapy than traditional expressed bergamot, but proper dilution is still essential.
